Is there any value in speciating Acinetobacter lwoffii from Acinetobacter junii? Is this important for determining antibiotic susceptibilities?
There is no value in separating A. lwoffii from A. junii. For the most part separating the 31 plus species of Acinetobacter is beyond the scope of clinical laboratories. We recommend that clinical laboratories report saccharolytic species (i.e. those that oxidize OF Glucose and Lactose) as A. baumannii and report the asaccharoltyic species as A. lwoffii. Susceptibility testing should be performed on any Acinetobacter species that are judged to be clinically significant.
