Staphylococcal susceptibility to beta-lactam antimicrobials, including cephalosporins or more accurately the cephems, is tested best using cefoxitin. The cefoxitin result (using staphylococcal breakpoints) applies to methicillin and other antistaphylococcal penicillins, all cephems, and other beta-lactams such as the carbapenems. It is necessary to use cefoxitin rather than other cephalosporin-type or penicillin drug. Please refer to CLSI (formerly NCCLS) publication M100-S16. Good luck.
