CAN AMIKACIN BE USED TO TREAT ESBL INFECTIONS IF IT SHOWS INVITRO SENSITIVITY?
The presence of ESBLs has no impact on the interpretation of in vitro aminoglycoside susceptibility. If amikacin appears susceptible in vitro, it should be reported as susceptible. The clinician can then decide what antimicrobial agent or combination of agents to use to treat the infection.
