My Emergency Room physicians are asking us to perform rapid strep testing on wound culture collections for early treatment of strep wounds. What methods other than gram stain are available?
To my knowledge gram stain and culture are still the most reliable methods for the confirmation of Strep in wounds. The rapid latex methods for group A strep testing on throats are not FDA cleared for wounds. I'm not sure if home brew PCR methods have been used for rapid testing on skin and soft tissue specimens. They would be expensive to perform 24/7.I'm assuming they are looking primarily for Gp A Strep in these specimens. I think you are stuck with the traditional methods until faster and more cost effective tests are developed and evaluated.
