can we use chloraprep on blood culture bts top instead of alcohol during collection.
The Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook, 2nd edition (http://estore.asm.org/viewItemDetails.asp?ItemID=323) recommends using 70% alcohol and allow to dry completely. In an email survey on the ClinMicroNet list serve, 11 of 12 clinical microbiology laboratory directors stated "We require removing the plastic cover on the bottle, wiping the rubber top with alcohol, removing the wipe, then adding the blood via the needle" None used chloraprep. Another excellent low price but high value is Cumitech 1C Blood Cultures located at http://estore.asm.org/viewItemDetails.asp?ItemID=437 Updated Review of Blood Culture Contamination Clinical Microbiology Reviews, October 2006, p. 788-802, Vol. 19, No. 4 http://cmr.asm.org/cgi/content/abstract/19/4/788
