Micrococcus sp are seperated into colors, varians yellow, rosea red, is it possible for the species to change color? we obtained an id from v2c system as Kocuria varians, but it is white, not yellow. can we rule out based on color pigmentation??? kimbley@comcast.net
My first question would be, is the isolate clinicaly significant? Kocuria species are not commonly recovered from clinical specimens and rarely are involved in infections. Check out JCM 2005 vol 43 p.1448 and JCM 2005,43:5832 for discussions on the reliability of Vitek 2 for ID of Kucuria spp. There seems to be questions. I would always be skeptical when an uncommon org is identified by an automated or manual commercial ID system without knowing performance data and the number of strains in the respective data bases. K. varians is not the most commonly isolated Kocuria spp. from clinical material nor has it been implicated in a human infection to my knowledge. They are described as being yellow so I cannot comment on color variation. The best way to varify would be to have DNA sequencing performed. We hope that we were able to answer your question.
