Is it appropriate to include a therapy related comment from a reference microbiology text on the patient report for organisms that have no standardized susceptibility method available or routine susceptibility testing is not necessary, e.g. Pasteurella from bite wound?
Yes, if your medical staff agrees, you can add a comment that suggests a therapeutic strategy. You should, however, make sure the medical staff approves the verbiage that you intend to use. There are some "therapy" strategies in CLSI M100...these are the comments preceded by an "Rx" designation. Nevertheless, there is now a standard disk and MIC method for testing Pasteurella described in the new CLSI M45-A. But, it is generally not indicated to test this organism from non-sterile sites since the drugs that would be prescribed (for a bite wound) would cover Pasteurella.
