Members of the genus Sarcina are strict anaerobes (Micrococcus or Kocuria spp are not). At one time Sarcina lutea and Micrococcus luteus were synonymous, but that is no longer the case. Phylogenetically, Sarcina fits within the Clostridium genus, while as noted, M. luteus now is considered a member of the Kocuria genus.
