LMX/lidocaine creme and blood cultures. Is there a problem with using lidocaine creme and then cleansing the site for a blood culture draw? Would the numbing effect of the creme be changed by cleansing with ChloraPrep immediately before the blood culture draw?
Actually, I have no idea. In fact, I have never heard of using an anesthetic before a venipuncture and do not have any experience with it. I asked two pharmacists. We decided that, logically, in a few minutes after application the anesthetic would have it's effect, so the ChloraPrep would remove only the anesthetic on the surface of the skin. If this is not the case then, logically, the patient will let you know. You might contact the manufacturer or read the package insert. Maybe some help there.
