Help

I have an isolate from a blood culture which is a gram negative bacilli. Oxidase and catalase negative. Grows in CO2 no growth anaerobically. Growth on chocolate but not macconkey agar. Utilizes no sugars but urea positive. Neither fermentative nor oxidative. Can you help? Thank you
The combination of oxidase and catalase negative, urea positive, no growth on MacConkey and asaccharolytic fits Brucella canis. Most Brucella species are fermentative but the reaction may be delayed. Other Brucella species are positive for both oxidase and catalase. Suggest you repeat oxidase and catalase. Also perform nitrate reduction. B. canis are nitrate positive. Be sure to perform all testing in a biohazard hood because Brucella species can be acquired in the laboratory. If you believe you have a Brucella species you should send isolate to your State Department of Health Laboratory for confirmation.
