What is the significance of Gardnerella vaginalis in male genital cultures? Should this organism be reported, and is it a cause of UTI in males? Thanks
There is a growing list of recognized pathogens of urethritis in the male; Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, M. genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, HSV, and adenovirus. There are ongoing studies looking at the role of bacterial vaginosis associated flora in male genital infections, but there are currently no recommendations to culture for Gardnerella vaginalis. In fact, a recent study showed no association of G. vaginalis (by PCR) with male urethritis (Bradshaw et al., J. Infect. Dis. 193(3):336-345, 2006)
