Although I would be sure to include media which would be expected to grow pathogens expected at this site (e.g. gc), I would not list each pathogen per se. I would simply report "normal genital flora." If the woman is between the ages of 12-55, I mention Group B strep (e.g.
"normal flora including Group B strep").*****True?
Can you include the statement "No Gp B Beta strep isolated" if you did not set up a LIM broth on these cultures? I would not.
Should LIM broths be set up on all genital cultures if physicians sometimes order a genital culture instead of a GBS screen? No, I would educate physicians to order the correct test. In addition, if you would include a Group B screen when a genital culture is requested, you are passively encouraging collection of improper specimen testing. The correct test is a screen for vaginal AND rectal sampling. I know education is really hard, but it's what needs to be done. Try having your director or pathologist calling the offending physician(s), giving in-services to OB-GYN departmental meetings, newsletters on the topic.
