Although many coagulase negative Staphlococcus (CoNS) are resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents, I feel that it is still worthwhile to perform susceptibility testing. If there opportunities to not use vancomycin for treatment of infections by these organsims it would be useful for the physician to have the susceptibility results.
If there is a concensus among your medical staff that this susceptibility testing is not necessary then I would have this policy reviewed and approved by the appropriate medical staff committes, including Infection Control, at your institution before discontinuing rountine susceptibility testing of CoNS.
