How likely is it that the MicroScan has incorrectly ID'd Aerococcus viridans from a urine culture? It was the only organism ID'd and the patient was symptomatic and reides in a nursing home. Levofloxacin was used to treat. Was it Aerococcus viridans? It's the first i've seen in 7 + years of reading the antibiograms.
Hi, I am sorry but it is impossible to tell whether the identification was correct or not given the information in your question. Was the isolate's colony and gram stain morphology consistant with Aerococcus? (Alpha hemolytic and tetrads/clusters in broth). What was the catalase reaction? We (the folks in R&D at Dade Behring MicroScan) work hard to provide a product that does provide a correct identification, but not every organism is in the database, and not every organism behaves as expected. The Microbiologist must critically evaluate the results of any identification system to make sure that the answer makes sense.
