what are the different methods of streaking where to use what/ secondly advantages of each of them?
Thanks for your interest in ASM's Askit. Two basic streaking methods are used; quadrant streaking and whole plate cross streaking for quantitation. Quadrant streaking dilutes inhibitory agents, allows semiquantitation of bacteria and provides isolated colonies for further testing. Whole plate cross streaking provides separated colonies over the whole plate that can be counted and multiplied by the dilution factor to give a more accurate estimate of bacteria (colony forming units) in the original specimen. A complete disucssion of these methods can be found in basic clinical microbiology textbooks. Good luck.
