We report MICs for clindamycin and erythromycin on Group B strep on penicillin allergic maternity patients. The lowest dilution well for erythromycin on our current microscan panel is 0.5, but the CLSI breakpoints are <=0.25 sus and 0.5 intermediate. Any suggestions for reporting or extra testing on isolates with an erythromycin MIC of <=0.5 (99% of our isolates)?
Thanks again for your interest in ASM's Askit. Unfortunately, to measure the MIC low enough to report the result as susceptible you need a different test system. Or, you could supplement your current system with an erythromycin E-test strip. If you are using the the Microscan strep panel, the dilution goes much lower than 0.25 ug/ml. I suspect that you are using the wrong tray, i.e., the regular Gram positive tray without the added laked horse blood present in the strep tray. Contact Microscan to make sure you have selected the correct product. Good luck. We hope that we were able to answer your question. Please visit us again at the American Society for Microbiology.
